Legacy Magnetic Stripe and Keyboard-Wedge Reader Support
Some existing EZ-CAPSS customers may still have older magnetic-stripe or keyboard-wedge reader workflows. These devices should be treated as legacy support paths, not as the recommended direction for new installations.
For new ID-capture planning, use current workflows such as PDF417 barcode scanning or camera-based ID capture.

Legacy reader status
| Reader path | Recommendation | Status | Replacement path |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing magnetic-stripe / keyboard-wedge reader | Continue only where already supported for an existing customer workflow. | Legacy for Existing Customers | Plan replacement with PDF417 scanner or camera ID capture. |
| New magnetic-stripe / legacy wedge purchase | Do not buy as the new-install direction. | Not Recommended | Use current ID-capture guidance. |
| PDF417 USB HID barcode scanner | Preferred dedicated scanner behavior for driver-license capture. | Expected to Work | See PDF417 scanner page. |
| Camera-based ID capture | Supported alternative workflow where setup conditions are appropriate. | Supported | See camera capture page. |
What legacy support means
Legacy support means EZ-CAPSS may help existing customers continue or replace an older reader workflow where the device is already part of their setup. It does not mean older magnetic-stripe or keyboard-wedge readers are recommended for new purchases.
Recommended replacement paths
For current ID-capture planning, review:
A PDF417 USB HID keyboard-wedge scanner can be a good path for stores that want dedicated scanner input. Camera-based ID capture can be a good path where a supported Windows tablet/camera setup fits the store workflow.
FAQ
Can I keep using my old reader?
If you are an existing EZ-CAPSS customer, contact EZ-CAPSS before changing hardware. Legacy support depends on the device, Windows setup, and workflow.
Should I buy another magnetic-stripe reader?
For new purchases, older magnetic-stripe or legacy wedge readers are not recommended. Review PDF417 scanner or camera-based ID capture options instead.
What should I replace it with?
Most replacement planning should start with either a USB HID keyboard-wedge PDF417 scanner or camera-based ID capture, depending on your store workflow.
